Police have launched an investigation after officers were assaulted by a large group of football fans following St Johnstone's home match against Hibernian. The incident occurred last Sunday evening after St Johnstone secured a 2-1 Premiership victory at McDiarmid Park.

The trouble began at Stirling railway station around 7pm. Transport Police had arrested a man who was being abusive to officers on a train. A large group of fans then reportedly surrounded and assaulted the officers before fleeing the scene by boarding a train to Edinburgh Park station. An investigation into the assault is now underway.

Detectives are urging anyone who was on the station platform and saw the incident to come forward.

The off-field incident follows a positive on-pitch result for Craig Levein's side. A double from J. Fowler, including a 41st-minute penalty, secured a 2-1 win over Hibs, moving St Johnstone to 7th in the Premiership with seven points from six games. Their recent form reads one win, one draw and three defeats from the last five matches.

Attention now turns to the next fixture, a home match against 9th-placed Dundee United on October 17.
