Hibernian have sacked head coach David Gray, making him the first Premiership manager to be dismissed this season. The decision follows a run of three consecutive league defeats, one of which was a 2-1 loss to St Johnstone earlier this month.

Executive chairman Ian Gordon confirmed the move ahead of Hibernian's upcoming match against Aberdeen, with John Potter taking interim charge. Gray's departure comes despite him having guided the club to a Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Hearts and narrowly missing out on European qualification last term. The team's current league position and recent struggles are detailed in the latest standings and stats.

Ian Gordon released a statement thanking Gray for his service. "Firstly, I would like to thank Dave for everything he has done for the Football Club, as a player, coach and most recently Head Coach," Gordon said. He added that Gray had been "an inspirational figure" and a "true friend" to many at Easter Road.

The statement acknowledged the decision was difficult but pointed to a recent downturn in results and performances. It wished Gray, along with assistants Liam Craig and Craig Samson, well for the future, stating they would always be welcome back.

St Johnstone's 2-1 victory over Hibernian on 6 September was part of the three-match losing streak that precipitated Gray's exit. That result helped St Johnstone climb the table, and they currently sit sixth in the Premiership with eight points from seven games. Their recent form reads one win, two draws and two losses from their last five outings.

Craig Levein's side drew 1-1 with Falkirk in their last match, with Enes Alic scoring a late equaliser. The squad, which has faced challenges with player availability, will be hoping for a full-strength selection as they prepare for their next match.
